Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)

Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) is a technology used to identify items as they pass through a gated area. Typically this identification is used to alert someone of the unauthorised removal of items from a store, library, or data centre.

The underlying technology used in Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) is RFID and there are several types of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) systems.

In each case an Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tag or label is affixed to an item.

When the item is purchased then the tag is deactivated, however, should the item is moved through the gates (usually at the entrance / exit doors to the premises) and not have been deactivated (i.e. stolen) the gates will sense that the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tag is active and sound an alarm.

Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tags can be used anywhere there is a chance of theft from small items to large, by simply placing an Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tag on an item.

Often these days, the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tag is placed in the product at the time of manufacture or packaging, this makes the labelling of goods unnecessary (in the store), saving time and money.
